A common misperception, however, is that pull factors, such as socially, politically and economically attractive circumstances, explain solely why migrants come to the U.S. Individuals around the globe migrate for a broad variety of reasons, which can be conceptualized in two general terms: The movement often occurs over long distances and from one country to another (external migration), but internal migration (within a single country) is also possible; indeed, this is the dominant form of human migration globally. Why? We need to find ways of making that migration not forced. Fleeing crop failure, land and job shortages, rising taxes, and famine, many came to the U. S. because it was perceived as the land of economic opportunity.
