Inconel 600

Inconel 600 ® Nickelvac 600 ®, Ferrochronin 600

Inconel 600 is a Nickel-Chromium Alloy having a great resistance to oxidation and corrosion. It is a standard engineering material used for various purposes in the heat-treating industry. Inconel 600 can be defined as the perfect combination of high strength and good weld ability along with excellent mechanical properties. It provides resistance to a number of organic and inorganic compounds, alkaline solutions and chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking as well. This is because of the high nickel content in Inconel 600 which provides exceptional resistance at high temperatures. Besides heat-treating industries, this nickel alloy is also used in aerospace, furnace component, pulp and paper, nuclear engineering and chemical industries.

Relevant Standards

Following standards cover Inconel 600:

  •   ASTM B166
  •   BS 3075 and BS 3076 NA 14
  •   AMS 5687

Inconel 600 can be formed both ways i.e. cold-formed and hot-formed by different processes. The temperature range in between 1600° to 2250°F (870° to 1230°C) is the normal hot working temperature range for Inconel 600.For heavy hot work, the range should be in between 1900° and 2250°F (1040° and 1230°C); light work can be done to 1600°F (870°C). At temperatures between 1200° and 1600°F (650° and 870°C), this nickel alloy has low ductility and therefore, it should not be worked in that very range. If carefully worked at temperatures below 1200°F (650°C), high tensile properties can be developed in the alloy. The cold-formation of Inconel 600 is done by the standard processes used for steel and that of stainless steel.

Because of cracking and micro structural segregation, welding of Inconel 600 is troublesome. Gas tungsten arc welding is the most common welding method. Recently pulsed micro laser welding have turned out to be popular as well.

Compared to Type 304 stainless steel, alloy 600 is slightly more machinable but less machinable than that of Type 303 free-machining stainless steel. Inconel 600 is increasingly used in extreme environments. It is common in chemical processing and pressure vessels, gas turbine blades, heat exchanger tubing, firearm sound suppressor blast baffles, seals and combustors, electric submersible well pump motor shafts, natural gas progressing with contaminants such as H2S and CO2, turbocharger rotors and seals, high temperature and fasteners, steam generators in nuclear pressurized water reactors and Formula One and NASCAR exhaust systems. This alloy is also used in the boilers of waste incinerators.

Dharanidhara metals is the leading suppliers, manufacturers and exporters of quality Inconel 600 in various forms.
